Why Africa?

I believe Africa has been sitting somewhere in the back of my being since my early teens.
It has something to do with my desperate readiness to fight injustice. It’s the same emotion that has made me obsessed with the Holocaust since I was a kid. I’m not sure if anything upsets me more than injustice or the idea that any person or people are above another. This dormant passion for Africa was rapidly awakened in 2005 when I first learned about Invisible Children and watched their documentary. I could not believe what children in Uganda had to do to stay alive. Over 66,000 kids have been abducted. The “Lord’s Resistance Army” ransacks homes in the middle of the night. They kill the younger children and kidnap the ones capable enough to be trained to kill other children and be a part of their army. Some of these children trained to kill are as young as six. Learning this changed me; it evoked my rage.

This is where my passion for Uganda began.

Elie Wiesel (a Holocaust survivor) has been a favorite author of mine since I first read Night at the age of 14. When I heard him speak about the genocide in Darfur a short time later, it definitely caught my attention. 2.5 million displaced people, 400,000+ people dead.  This is a government killing its own.

This is where my passion for Darfur began.

I believe everyone has a cause they feel is worth fighting for. For some people it’s cancer, or domestic violence, or feeding the homeless. All are very worthy causes, and all are based on helping people in need. Consider the amount of progress that’s been made in Breast Cancer because so many people have decided to take action. For me, my cause is Africa. Whatever your cause may be, stand for it. Without standing for something, nothing would ever change. Be part of a movement. Be part of history.
